From Observations to Forecasts - concluding article (Part 15): Opportunities and challenges for today's operational weather forecasters
Mayes, J.
As promised in our January 2012 issue, this is the 'bonus' article for this series which was devised by Julian Mayes. The aims of the series were (i) to illustrate recent developments in meteorological observation (both surface observations and from space) and assess the implications of these developments, especially for forecasting; (ii) to show how improved or new types of observations have contributed to more effective weather prediction and forecasting over various timescales, and (iii) to provide reviews of the current state of knowledge in papers that will have a significant educational element. We hope readers feel that this aim has been met, and that this final article by its instigator brings the series to a worthy conclusion. A full bibliography of the series follows on page 107.
