Thomas Hughes's temperature record for Stroud, 1775-1795

Outdoor temperature data for England needed for assessing climate change are increasingly available from about 1770 onwards. However, most series of observations suffer from problems such as breaks in the data lasting months to years and discontinuities due to changes in instrument and/or exposure. The morning observations by Thomas Hughes at Stroud in Gloucestershire from 1775 to 1795 are thus of considerable potential value, although there are problems with missing data and variable observation times. Adjustments both to estimate for missing data and to align to a fixed time of 0700 local time have been applied to create monthly averages.
