Special issue : The DACH Conference 2010, September 20-24, 2010 in Bonn, Germany
The fourth triennial joint conference of the meteorological societies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland DACH2010 took place in Bonn from September 20th until 24th, 2010. Place of convention was the University main building in the city center of Bonn. The conference was attended by about 400 participants. The local organisation was shared by both the meteorological institutes at the universities in Bonn and Cologne. The reader will find a variety of topics reflecting partly the wide scientific program of DACH2010. The first paper by BERGEMANN and REICH (2012) describes advances in the application of the Ensemble Kalman filter technique to continuous observations in time for nonlinear model systems. HEINZE et al. (2012) present the results of large-eddy simulations for the well known phenomenon of Karman vortex streets behind an island blocking the low level atmospheric flow. PLsOGER et al. (2012) analyse water vapour and ozone observations in the tropical tropopause layer (TTL) during the three tropical observational campaigns SCOUT-O3, AMMA and TroCCiNOx using two different types of backward trajectories. BIERDEL et al. (2012) evaluate regional weather forecasts of COSMO-DE by a spatial spectral analysis and compare the results with observation which indicate a self-similar spectrum of the kinetic energy with a spectral decay k(?5/3) where k is the horizontal wavenumber. Finally GORGAS and DORNINGER (2012) assess the uncertainty of forecast verification measures introduced by observational uncertainties.
