A significant source of error in radar meteorology is the vertical variation in radar reflectivity. As a result of the radar beam sampling precipitation at longer range well above the surface the vertical profile of radar reflectivity must be well known if the surface rainrate is to be estimated. We discuss here the methods currently available for correcting for the effect of the vertical profile of reflectivity on surface rainrate estimation. Several possible variations and extensions of these methods are also suggested.
