AMDAR observation thinning is introduced to reduce the computational load and imbalance associated with the very large number of aircraft observations over the US. This is coupled with a reduction in AMDAR observation errors which are reduced to reflect the true observation quality. A series of trials have been completed in both the Summer and Winter seasons testing the impact of these changes. Verification results show an overall null impact which is as expected.
