The current mesoscale SST analysis uses only buoy observations and a low resolution SST product from AVHRR data. The resulting analysis appears to lack high-resolution features. This report describes work undertaken to produce an SST product from 1km resolution AVHRR imagery and compares the quality of the observations with in-situ SST observations. During autumn 1998 comparisons with in-situ SST observations show standard deviations of approximately 1K or less, with the exception of NOAA-14 at night. Comparisons to those compared with in-situ SSTs. Some evidence was seen from results taken in summer and autumn 1999 that for sporadic passes the brightness temperatures are incorrect due to a problem within Autosat-3, which is being investigated. This problem slightly affected the results of comparisons of SST observations with in-situ observations for 3 weeks in autumn 1999. A standard
