This paper describes a significant storm that caused considerable damage - in particular in Glasgow - on 15 January 1968. On the 50th anniversary of this storm, we describe its effects and the causes of the damage it caused. The response to the infrequent severe storms that affect the British Isles has included the development of the forecasting system and an increase in awareness in the general public; both of these projects were sponsored by National Meteorological Services.
