International cooperation in meteorology was one of the great success stories of the second half of the twentieth century. This article reviews the precursors to that success in the pioneering role of the International Meteorological Organization (IMO) established in 1873 and the early work of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) which replaced it in 1950.
