The meteorological legacy of the First World War

Année de publication
2018

This month, we mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. The war was notable for its completion of the industrialised form of battle, with many new machines dominating fighting, including tanks, long-range artillery and, in particular, as far as meteorology is concerned, aircraft, ranging from airships to gliders. Weather conditions were, perhaps for the first time, a significant factor for all theatres of war. The result was a significant change of direction for many of the world's meteorological services - not least the Met Office (Crewe, 2000; Walker, 2012), which is the main focus of this paper.
