Climate prediction and agriculture : proceedings of an international workshop
Prévision climatique et agriculture : actes d'un atelier international
Sivakumar, Mannava V. K.
In March 1996 the Joint Scientific Committee of the World Climate Research Programme ( WCRP) initiated a discussion on the need to demonstrate utility of climate predictions to the agricultural sector. For this purpose, a program on Climate Prediction and Agriculture ( CLIMATEG) was established under START in joint sponsorhip with IGBP and IHDP. START undertook to develop appropriate regional activities to promote practical application of climate science to agricultural production. The strategic research carried out by the IGBP, IHDP and WCRP and other appropriate organizations such as IRI, is expected to underpin such applications-oriented regional action.
A post script : Since the workshop, in collaboration with its partners START has (i) established a CLIMAG Steering group to guide the overall implementation of the program and (ii) initiated two regional demonstration projects in South Asia and West Africa, and pilot projects in other regions. The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) has taken the lead to initiate regional demonstration projects in the South American region.

The overrall CLIMAG effort, this workshop and proceedings are possible because of the sponsorship of many partners. START owes them a debt of gratitude. Special acknowledgements are due to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO° for hosting this workshop. It is also a pleasure to acknowledge the dedicated and able effort of the editor of this proceedings, DR. M. V. K. Sivakumar. ( Roland Fuchs Director International START Secretariat )
