Under clear skies and a low Sun, a dark patch appears on a surface of water at 90° from the Sun. The phenomenon is a naked-eye manifestation of the polarisation of light of the blue sky. Although this every-day occuring phenomenon is very conspicuous, it is only since 1980 that it has been discussed in the literature.
