The urban heat island (UHI) effect describes the tendency for a built-up area to be significantly warmer than the surrounding countryside and is one of the clearest examples of how human activity can influence local climate. Using meteorological data from two observing sites, the town of Reading (Berkshire) is found to possess a distinct diurnal cycle in UHI intensity in summer and winter, which is enhanced in heatwave conditions but is suppressed in windy weather.
