A prototype water vapour Differential Absorption LIDAR (DIAL) was set up at King's Park Meteorological Station in Hong Kong for 6 weeks in the summer of 2017 for a trial observation, in cooperation with the manufadurer. The DIAL measured the vertical humidity profile of the lowest few hundred metres to more than 1 km above ground level of the atmosphere with a very high vertical resolution of 1Om. During this trial exercise, the DIAL observed close passages of the Super Typhoon Hato and the Severe Tropical Storm Pakhar. The centre of Typhoon Hato skirted past the DIAL at a distance of around 60km to its southwest. It is the first DIAL observation of a super typhoon at such a short distance.
This trial exercise demonstrates the potential of the water vapour DIAL for operational weather observation and forecasting in the subtropics. More observations and case studies by interested parties are strongly recommended.
