In 1811, Captain Tillard of the British navy visited the island of São Miguel, Azores. While there, he witnessed an eruption of an underwater volcano that produced revolving plume, waterspouts, and lightning. Almost two centuries later, Chakraborty et al. (2009) used the Captain's narrative of the eruption and satellite images of 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines, 2008 eruption of Mount Chaitén in Chile, and other eruptions to allege that behaviour and properties of the strong volcanic plumes are similar to those of meteorological mesocyclones.</p>
