This publication is the second of two volumes constituting the Proceedings of the International Conference on Structure, Composition and General Circulation of the Upper and Lower Atmospheres and Possible Anthropogenic Perturbations. This Conference, held in Melbourne, Australia, January 14-25, 1974 was one of the most comprehensive conferences ever held on this subject. This Conference, held in connection with the IAMAP First Special Assembly in Melbourne, Australia, was ably convened by Dr. P. Goldsmith and Dr. A.D. Belmont assisted by several members of IAMAP's Commissions. The papers presented are now published in the Proceedings. Owing to the large number of papers, some quite extensive, the Proceedings appears in two volumes. Volume I , published in late May, 1974, contained two Keynote addresses: " Important Problems of Global Pollution " by C.E. Junge and "Diagnostic Studies of the General Circulation of the Stratosphere by R.E. Newell et al., as well as the papers presented in Sessions I-VI. These Sessions covered a wide range of topics: Aerosols; Aerosols and Gases; Gases; Ozone and Gases; Ozone (a)-mainly chemistry and (b)-mainly radiation. This present volume includes Sessions VII-XV.
In order to publish the Proceedings as soon as possible following the actual Conference, the papers are, with only necessary technical editing, published as submitted. Time constraints prevented providing authors with page proofs but every attempt has been made to proofread all papers with care. We apologize for any errors which may have escaped our attention. No attempt has been made to referee papers and all papers submitted have been included. The views expressed in these papers are the author's personal opinions and do not necessarily reflect those of any institute or organisation with which they are associated.
The Proceedings has been published under the auspices of the Sectetatiat of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics. Due to the nature of the Proceedings no editor was appointed. Two technical editors, Mrs. N.J. Derco and Mr. E.J. Truhlar, assumed editorial responsibility. They shared in the task of editing, within the set time limitation, all the submitted papers and in addition Mrs. Derco assumed the responsibility for the actual production and publication of the Proceedings. The technical editors extend their sincere thanks to the DSS-Cold Type Centre who spent so many weeks under pressure to produce the excellent copy. Thanks are also due to many others who so willingly helped when needed.
We feel that the Proceedings will be a valuable contribution to this field of study. IAMAP is grateful for the financial support provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Climatic Impact Assessment Program and the Australian Academy of Science. Volumes I and II have been distributed to all principal authors, Chairmen of Seesions, IAMAP National Correspondents and Executive and Commission Offices. In addition a supply of both Volumes has been sent to the CIAP Office, U.S. Department of Transportation. Additional copies are available at a nominal cost from the Secretary, IAMAP. ( Foreword by Dr. S. Fritz ( President IAMAP) , Dr W.L.Godson ( Secratary IAMAP))
