Gulf Stream and Kuroshio synchronization
Synchronisation du Gulf Stream et du Kuroshio
Cessi, Paola
Extratropical cyclones (and anticyclones) in the Northern Hemisphere are preferentially located along storm tracks with centers of action at the exit regions of the major western boundary ocean currents. These currents are the Gulf Stream and the Kuroshio in the North Atlantic and North Pacific, respectively. As these currents strengthen or weaken, or migrate in latitude, the strength and location of storm tracks is affected. On page 341 of this issue, Kohyama et al. use satellite observations, high-resolution coupled atmosphere-ocean models, and a simple conceptual model to demonstrate that the Gulf Stream and Kuroshio are synchronized through the atmospheric Atlantic and Pacific storm tracks.
