On two consecutive nights in December 1981 and on eight consecutive nights in January 1982, screen minimum temperatures below -20°C were recorded somewhere in the United Kingdom, with local values below -25" on some nights. This paper describes the main observational features of this period, discusses possible physical causes for the extreme cold, and provides guidance for the forecaster.</p>
