Surface-based convection inland in winter?

It is distinctly unusual to observe fresh surface-based convection, sufficient to generate heavy showers, developing inland around the winter solstice over Britain, due to the weakness of insolation. This case study demonstrates, however, that this is indeed possible across southern England, with limited diurnal heating, given moist and slightly unstable profiles. However, it was almost certainly the presence of larger scale dynamically forced ascending motion that assisted the observed rapid growth of convection.</p>
