A storm surge event in the Irish Sea on 1 February 2002 caused significant coastal flooding around the Isle of Man. Following this event, a group was formed to develop a flood warning system for the Island. A network of tide gauges was installed around the Island and a method was developed to improve the short-term prediction of high water levels. The flood warning system was later extended to include rainfall and river flooding, and flood warning pages were added to the Island's government website.</p>
