A colourful world of weather: representing local climatology in forecasts

Weather is relative; a minimum temperature of +1°C at the Abbey Gardens in Tresco on Isles of Scilly is extreme, yet commonplace at most other sites during a UK winter. Categorising and displaying temperatures in terms of the local, site-specific and long-term observed climatology is ideally suited to the communication and analysis of both deterministic and probabilistic forecasts. Furthermore, these categories also make all-site, regional and site-specific forecast performance relatively straightforward to present.</p>
