The 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season: A Long Parade of Storms
Pasch, Richard J.
Tropical cyclone activity was above average in the Atlantic basin in 2021. There were 21 named storms, of which 7 became hurricanes and 4 became major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale). In comparison, the 1991-2020 seasonal averages are 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes. The 2021 ACE index, a measure that considers the strength, duration, and frequency of the season's tropical storms and hurricanes, was about 50% above the long-term median value. Ten of the season's tropical cyclones made landfall in North America, and two hurricanes, Ida and Nicholas, made landfall in the United States. Ida caused enormous damage in Louisiana. Grace and Larry made landfalls as hurricanes in Mexico and Canada, respectively. There was a total of 96 direct deaths. </p>
