The 2021 Eastern North Pacific Hurricane Season: A plethora of storms but few majors
Latto, Andy S.
There were 19 named storms in the eastern North Pacific basin during the 2021 hurricane season (Table 1). Of the 19 tropical storms that formed, 7 became hurricanes and 2 reached major hurricane strength (Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale). This activity was above average for total named storms but was below average for the numbers of hurricanes and major hurricanes. For comparison, the 1991-2020 averages are about 15 tropical storms, 8 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes. Figures 1 and 2 depict the tracks of the tropical storms and hurricanes of the 2022 eastern North Pacific hurricane season. The Accumulated Cyclone Energy index, a measure that considers the strength, duration, and frequency of the season's tropical storms and hurricanes, was about 95% of the long-term median value. Six of the season's tropical cyclones, Dolores, Enrique, Olaf, Nora, Pamela, and Rick, affected Mexico, causing 12 fatalities. The remainder of the tropical cyclones formed well offshore of Mexico or Central America and remained offshore. Since 1949, there have been only 2 other seasons (1958 and 1971) in which 6 landfalls were observed in this basin. Also, since that time, there have been only two other seasons (1971 and 1996) in which 4 hurricanes made landfall.</p>
