2022

There were around 1,311 tornadoes in the United States in 2021, which is about 11% above the yearly average over the past 10 years. The year began on a below-average note with the fewest tornadoes in 17 years for January and February combined, although a few noteworthy early season tornadoes nonetheless occurred. March was quite active, including multiple regional tornado outbreaks across the Deep South. However, April was rather quiet, with only around 35% of the typical number of tornadoes, including the fewest April tornadoes since 1992. The overall tornado counts of May were around the 15-year average, although May had no EF3+ tornadoes for the first time in the modern record (since 1950). Active July and August months were influenced by multiple landfalling tropical systems. October had a record-setting number of tornadoes. December's 230+ tornadoes shattered longstanding records, more than double the previous number of tornadoes of any other December (2002 had 97 tornadoes).</p>
