Upon my accepting appointment as Chief Editor of 6 materials prepared for the International Workshop ETropical Cyclones (IWTC), I requested volunteers to rticipate in this task. Perhaps the hurried organization of the writing team, and the uncertainty of the Quired effort, prevented some IWTC participants from blunteering.First, the nine basic topic areas at the IWTC were condensed into six chapter headings. Although it was tended that six individuals would serve as 'editors' or authors, a volunteer could not be found for the analsis chapter. Thus, I undertook that task as well. A preliminary draft of each chapter was circulated for comment or revision to all rapporteurs (see list at beinning of each chapter) who contributed to the preworkshop materials used at the IWTC. These comnents, and those by authors of the other chapters, were used to prepare a draft of the complete volume. W. M. Gray. Y. Kurihara and R. Merrill undertook a detailed review of this draft. The final version Was produced in response to these reviews.Special thanks are due to Dr. Robert F. Abbey, Jr.,pof the Marine Meteorology section of the U.S. Office of Naval Research for arranging funding for the publication. I would like to thank all rapporteurs, editors and reviewers for their efforts that made this book possible. Special typing support by Mrs. Penny Jones of the Naval Postgraduate School is acknowledged. Until the stock published in the first printing has been exhausted, copies may be obtained from me at the address below / Russell L.
