History books are full of dates that are famous-or infamous-for the events that took place on them: July 4, 1776; December 7, 1941; July 20, 1969; or September 11, 2001, for example. It was the thought of dates on which nothing noteworthy happened, however, that led William Tunstall-Pedoe, a Cambridge-trained computer scientist (and, later, a member of the team that developed and launched Amazon's voice-activated assistant, Alexa), to use artificial intelligence to identify 'the most boring day in modern history,' at least since the dawn of the 20th century.</p>
