The global weather enterprise, part 3: an evolving picture
L'entreprise météorologique mondiale, partie 3 : une image en évolution
Thorpe, Alan
In the final part of these articles on the global weather enterprise, we will look forward to speculate on the evolution that can be anticipated. As we have seen already in part 2, the weather enterprise has advanced hugely in all aspects of the endeavour. However, societal and economic drivers are increasing at a rapid rate meaning that the growing need for much higher quality weather and climate information presents the enterprise with some significant challenges. The trends we are seeing now in meteorological science and technology, and in the structure and organisation of the global weather enterprise, offer the potential to satisfy this growing need. However, these advances and its evolution must be harnessed as quickly as possible. Continued success of the enterprise in satisfying the needs cannot be taken for granted. There will be many opinions on the likely evolution of the weather enterprise and the discussion presented here is but one.</p>
