The history of UK weather forecasting: the changing role of the central guidance forecaster. Part 4: windstorms, snowstorms and further technological developments
Young, Martin V. ; Grahame, Nick S.
In Part 3 (Young and Grahame, 2023a), we showed how the introduction of the 10-level model in 1972 marked the beginning of a steady improvement in skill at forecasting the evolution of major synoptic systems including fronts and precipitation. In addition, a much greater range of model output and imagery were becoming available. Nevertheless, there remained considerable scope for the forecaster to use expertise to add value to numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, both at the synoptic scale and for interpreting the charts in terms of actual weather. However, significant challenges remained, examples of which we address in this paper.</p>
