Doppler LiDAR systems offer the opportunity to monitor the vertical motion of the atmospheric boundary layer. This article documents the use of a Doppler LiDAR to monitor the vertical velocity in the urban area of Hong Kong. A number of new interesting features are revealed in the vertical velocity data, which could not be achieved before with the use of other ground-based remote-sensing meteorological measurements, such as radar wind profilers, and in situ meteorological measuring equipment like radiosondes. The vertical motion may offer some hints about the advection of higher temperatures to the site, subsidence drying and updrafts before the occurrence of intense convective weather. This article is the first step in documenting the vertical motion, and subsequent studies could involve statistical analysis of vertical velocities from the LiDAR. </p>
