Storm Eunice caused severe wind impacts on the United Kingdom on 18 February 2022. This article contains the first of a two-part study and shows how Eunice's cyclone structure was well-forecast days in advance, but small-scale uncertainty persisted on peak-wind location and strength. Several indications of sting-jet activity in observations and model data are presented, including banding at the cloud-head tip visible from satellite imagery (see figure, copyright ©EUMETSAT). The detailed analysis of Eunice's airstream structure is left to the second part of this study.</p>
