Summer 2024 witnessed unprecedented heatwaves in Eastern Europe, particularly impacting Romania. Analysis of 140 years of data from Bucuresti Filaret station shows a significant increase in heatwaves' occurrence, with 2024 setting new records, both in terms of intensity and frequency. Attribution analysis suggests that such extreme temperatures would have been impossible without human-induced climate change. Additionally, compound hot and dry events have become more frequent, posing further challenges. These findings stress the urgent need for adaptation and mitigation strategies in Eastern Europe to address the escalating impacts of climate change.</p>
