After exceptional conditions in 2023, 2024 continued to exceed previous global and regional temperature records by substantial margins. The global mean surface temperature in 2024 was 1.55 ± 0.13°C above the pre-industrial average, with new temperature records set in 100 countries affecting 40% of the world's population. 2024 was the third-wettest year on record globally, with an extremely active Atlantic hurricane season and several newsworthy European flash-flooding events. It remains to be seen whether the recent step change in observed temperatures represents a true and persistent acceleration in warming trends.</div>
