Quantum computing, a technology that leverages quantum mechanical effects for computational processes, has demonstrated strong potential to one day benefit atmospheric science. The field has shown that it is computationally versatile and has the capability for extraordinary processing speed for several applications related to meteorology and climatology. Little understood outside of computer science fields, quantum computing remains in its nascent stages, but recent developments indicate that initial operational systems may be possible in the future. How far in the future, however, remains unclear as several immense technical challenges remain to be resolved.</div>
